Bessie Robertson Edwards, a native of Vance County, North Carolina, and daughter of the late James Madison Robertson and Bessie Pendergrass Robertson, fell asleep in Christ at age 99 at Maria Parham Health on February 17, 2023.

Bessie was born in Henderson, NC on May 20, 1923. Reared on a large farm, she was the last surviving sibling in a family of thirteen children and one foster brother.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Plummer Edwards, Jr., six brothers, five sisters, and a foster brother. She has two surviving children, Danny Michael Edwards (wife, Diane) of Alpharetta, GA and Nona Edwards Beckham of Henderson, NC. She also has four grandchildren, Andrew Joel Beckham, Jr. (wife, Kristen), Dr. Katie Michelle Edwards, Ph.D., Aileen Jenna Beckham (husband, Harrison Weber), and Kelly Edwards Slowik (husband, Jake). Bessie graduated from Aycock High School in Henderson, NC and went on to become a homemaker.

Throughout her life, she was an active member in several churches, and her final church membership at the time of her death was Freedom Life Church of God. Bessie was a great cook; her late husband would comment at every restaurant that the food was not like how Bessie would have made it. She loved her family and felt called to be an intercessory prayer warrior on their behalf. When it became necessary for her to reside permanently in Senior Citizen's Nursing Home, she was known to be seen and heard daily praying and singing hymns, as well as faithfully attending church services at the nursing home.

The family will receive friends for the viewing from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 25, 2023, at Freedom Life Church of God, 1001 Martin Creek Road, Henderson, NC, 27537. The funeral service will follow the viewing at 2:00 p.m., with her grandson, Pastor Joel Beckham, and her pastor, Pastor Jeff Prewer officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Gardens, 3174 US-158 BUS, Henderson, NC, 27536.

Pallbearers will be William Burnette, Douglas Horne, David Horne, Edgar Robertson, Jr., Tim Berry, and Harrison Weber.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Bessie's memory may be made to either New Life Baptist Church, P.O. Box 438, Henderson, NC 27536, or Freedom Life Church of God, 1001 Martin Creek Road, Henderson, NC, 27537.
