Obituary

After 83 years of adventure, hard work, and story-building, Elizabeth (Betty) Ann Hayden Chewning Allen of Henderson, NC, died Thursday, May 30, 2019. She was born January 21, 1936 in Tompkinsville, MD. She was the daughter of the late Robert Kermit Hayden, Sr. and Annie Mae Hayden. She was the widow of Alton Allen of Roxboro.

Betty loved working and meeting people. She was retired from the former Maria Parham Hospital and from Skipper Forsythe's Barbeque. She was also employed at the former Howard Johnson Restaurant and with Ted Wheeler Catering for many years. She most recently served as the Volunteer Coordinator for the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) transportation services that served Vance County, a role that she truly loved.

A service of remembrance will be held Saturday, June 8, 2019 at 11 a.m. at Sossamon Funeral Home, 1833 Oxford Road, Henderson conducted by Pastor Will Breedlove.

Surviving are a daughter, Bonny Strange; two grandchildren, Valerie Fox and husband Kyle, and Elizabeth Strange; two great-grandchildren, Bronson Henry Fox and Mavis Hayden Fox; four brothers, Luther Hayden, William Hayden, George Hayden and Julian Hayden; three sisters, Grace Smoley, Jean Maloney and Linda Stallard and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Tim Strange, two brothers, Robert K. Hayden Jr. and Charles Hayden and one sister, Mary Hammett.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
