Charlie Lawrence Wheelous Jr., known affectionately as “Charlie Brown”, passed away at the age of 58, on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at Moses Cone Hospital, in Greensboro, NC, where he received the utmost compassionate and professional care.
Charlie was born March 17, 1968, on St. Patrick’s Day, in Oxford, to his parents, Charlie Lawrence Wheelous Sr. and Margaret Woodlief Wheelous, and was welcomed by six older sisters and a large extended family.
Other than living one month in Greensboro, Charlie lived his life in Creedmoor. He attended Murdoch Center day school and later Granville County Schools, until age twenty-one. In 1990, Charlie moved from his parents' home to RHA on Park Ave. There, he was able live a somewhat independent life with his peers; yet remained close to family for regular visits and outings.
Charlie attended Mary’s Chapel Baptist Church, Bruce Garner Rd., Wake Forest for the majority of his life. He served Mary’s Chapel as an usher, a job he took extraordinary pride in.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 7, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. at Mary’s Chapel Baptist Church. Pastor Alvin Thomas will officiate. Burial will follow in the Wheelous Family Cemetery.
Charlie is survived by his six sisters, Melanie Stephens (David), Vickie Grissom and Blonnie Dee Wheelous of Creedmoor, Gina Morris (Roger) of Oxford, Tami Wheelous-Gardner of Smithfield and Mia Howell (Donnie) of Franklinton; twelve nieces and nephews; eighteen great nieces and nephews; fraternal aunt, Mary Nell Wheelous of Creedmoor; maternal aunt, Emma Ruth Woodlief of Tennessee and many cousins. He is also survived by his “family” members residing at RHA Group Homes at 105 Park Ave., in Creedmoor and 1508 Gatewood Ave., in Greensboro.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie L. and Margaret W. Wheelous of Creedmoor; maternal grandmother, Nancy D. Woodlief; brothers-in-law, Arthur T. Grissom and A. Max Gardner and a niece Megan Nicole Howell.
The family will receive friends Sunday, June 7, 2026, one hour prior to the service beginning at 2:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall at Mary’s Chapel Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Charlie to Friends of Murdoch – Volunteer Services, Murdoch Developmental Center, 1600 E. C St., Butner, NC 27509.
Charlie Brown lived an extraordinary life, and we were all blessed to have been a part of it. He will be remembered for his smiles, sense of humor, his playfulness, and his gentlemanly ways. He did love a good handshake.
Serving as pallbearers will be Joseph Grissom, Madison Gardner, Landon Allen, Connor Allen, Eddie Clary, Hayden Dunlap and Jonathan Morris.
Arrangements are by Sossamon Funeral Home of Creedmoor. Online condolences may be made at www.sossamonfuneralhome.com.
