Eddie Thomas Matthews, 69, of Oxford, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2026, at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

Born on July 16, 1956, in Wake County, North Carolina, Eddie was the son of the late Thomas Burton Matthews and Irene Gregory Matthews. He proudly served his country for a brief time in the United States Air Force.

Eddie was a highly skilled welder, maintenance technician and machine mechanic, dedicating many years of service to Lenox China and CertainTeed in Oxford, NC. He was known for his strong craftsmanship, and reliability throughout his career.

In his free time, Eddie enjoyed the outdoors and found great joy in spending time at Emerald Isle, boating, fishing, and visiting the mountains. He appreciated nature and had a love for bluegrass music.

He is survived by his children: David Matthews (Jessica) of Oxford, NC; Kimberly Currin; and Jon Currin (Renee) of Henderson, NC. He is also survived by his brothers, Glenn Matthews (Donna) and Tony Matthews (Barbara), both of Oxford, NC. Eddie was a proud grandfather to Alivia, Paisleigh, and Brayden Matthews; Geneva Pickard; and Avery Currin.

In addition to his parents, Eddie was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Gail Gresham Matthews, and his son, Daniel Matthews.
