Obituary

Effie Adcock Garrett, 97, of Oxford, passed away on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at her home.

Effie was born in Granville County on June 9, 1929. She was the daughter of the late William Bluford Adcock and Mattie Henderson Smith Adcock. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband and best friend of seventy-five years, Richard Garrett, and nine siblings.

Effie was a faithful member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Creedmoor, where her faith remained a guiding force throughout her life. She dedicated many years to caring for others, first at Murdoch Center in Butner and later at two daycare centers where she lovingly cared for young children. Known to her family as “Mama” and “Grandma,” she found her greatest joy in caring for those she loved. She enjoyed tending her garden, canning, and preparing home-cooked meals that brought her family together around the table. Her home was a place of love, comfort, and cherished memories, and her kindness, strength, and unwavering devotion to her family will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

She is survived by six children, Jenny Bowling (James), Cynthia Howell (Kimmie), Richard Garrett, Jr. (Vicki), Shelia Forsythe, Randy Garrett (Suzanne) and Scottie Garrett (Kelly); thirteen grandchildren, Angela, Brian (Erica), Kimberly (Allen), Phillip (Wendy), Shannon, Travis (Morgan), Stephanie, Michael, Aimee, Trey (Sarah), Justin, Devin (Whitney) and Meghan; twelve great grandchildren, Layton, Nolan, Braden, Jaxson, Liam, Jace, Sophie, Jax, Colt, Jayce, Kashton and Mia and numerous friends and extended family.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 27, 2026, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. David Herman officiating. Burial will follow at the Garrett Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. prior to the service.

Flowers are accepted, or donations may be made to Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, P.O. Box 745, Creedmoor, NC 27522, or online at https://pgbccreedmoor.org/resources/online-giving

The family wants to express their heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Helping Hands, especially Sherry Burt, Magain Townes, and Shinnell Burt, who went above and beyond to provide love and care for mama. Their kindness will always be remembered.
