Obituary

The Reverend Frank Edward Bourner, 91, died on August 19th, 2023 at his home in Creedmoor, NC. He was born in Huntington, W. V. on September 4, 1931, to Edward and Evah Bourner.

He was proceeded in death by his wife of 56 years, Janis Yvonne Yeargin Bourner, as well as his father, Edward, his mother, Evah, his brother, Carl Bourner and his sister Mary Jane Coward.

Left to mourn his passing are his wife, June Lindimore Bourner, his daughters, Susan Bourner and Karen Bourner Gibbons and granddaughters, Grace Gibbons, Sarah Gibbons, and Moss Madigan. Other surviving relatives are his nephew, Lake Cowart, Jr. an his wife, Ellen Cowart as well as Jane Conyers Martin and Glen Martin.
Reverend Bourner graduated from Marshall University with degrees in Religion and Philosophy. In 1959 he attended and attained his Master of Divinity from Duke Divinity School.
Upon graduation, he returned to the West Virginia Annual Conference where he served as a pastoral minister and a District Superintendent. He was invited to serve with renowned scholars, authors, and leaders of the World Methodist Evangelism Institute to participate in the Mission to Tonga. During this time, he trained church leaders from several Pacific Islands, led small group studies, and preached.
He was also selected as one of the 100 National Missioners by the National Board of Discipleship to lead New Life Missions. On behalf of the West Virginia Conference Board of Missions, Frank visited several United Methodist World Hunger Projects in Africa.
During his years as a pastoral minister, Reverend Bourner served as a trustee of West Virginia Wesleyan College, was active on several conference boards and district committees, and published articles in The Interpreter and The Pulpit Digest.
After 36 years of service in West Virginia, Reverend Bourner retired to Creedmoor, N.C. in 1995. He continued his ministry by serving as Interim Pastor in local churches in the North Carolina Methodist Conference.
His memorial service will be held at Asbury Church in Raleigh on August 23rd, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. Visitation will be held one hour before service from 1:00-2:00 p.m. The service will be conducted by Reverend Dr. Jonathan Jeffries.
The interment service will be held in Creedmoor, N.C. in Rogers Family Cemetery.
