Helen
Reid
August 25, 2023
Helen H Reid
Helen Elizabeth Hunt Reid is now singing with the heavenly angels. She's probably playing the
piano too, playing with joy and love. She was born April 5, 1938, in Henderson, NC, and
departed this life on August 25, 2023. Helen was the daughter of the late Andrew Jackson Hunt
and Agatha Lee Pendergrass Hunt. She was preceded in death by siblings Andrew Lee Hunt
(Dorothy), John O'Kelly Hunt (Martha), Alfred Green Hunt (Doris), Annie Belle Hunt Hughes
(Wesley), and Martha Oveida Hunt Peoples. She was also preceded in death by husband Earl
Reid. Her children left to mourn the absence of her laughter and zest for life are Rebecca Reid
Schwab and Dawn Reid Munse. She also leaves behind much loved grandchildren Jennifer
Berger (Bill) and Amy Wortham. But the light of her life were her great-grandchildren, Haley
Cathey, Christopher Cathey, Jacob Cathey, Lauren Jackson, Lauren Anne Berger, Emily Berger,
and Christian Berger.
A funeral service will be held Friday, September 1, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Sossamon Funeral Home Chapel in Henderson. Conducted by Rev. Michael H. Smith. Interment will follow at Sunset Gardens.
Helen spent her life dedicated to music at her church and playing for singers who were
spreading God's grace. She could play by ear and could hear a song and then sit down and play
it. She also could play by note, so could accompany a choir or singing group. Helen had a lovely
alto singing voice and sang solos for various functions. Helen could play the accordion too, but
it eventually was too heavy for her to hold and play.
Helen loved to travel. She would NOT get on a plane, but no car, bus, or train was safe from her
going somewhere interesting. She traveled to the World's Fair when it was held in New York
long ago. Helen traveled to Florida frequently to visit family. One year she and her sisters
decided to visit their brother in Los Angeles and they did so via bus. In recent years she and her
close friend Ruby McConnell took a car trip to Vermont, just because they had never been. Her
mountain traveling crew, including Ruby, plus Sandy and Eddie Grissom never missed a trip to
the NC mountains. Beach trips where she and nieces Sue Hughes Gupton and Faye Hughes
Duke would play bingo and talk until all hours of the night were great fun.
Helen could shop all day, walking circles around the rest of us. She didn't buy much; she just
liked to browse and hunt for bargains. Her Christmas decorations were beyond wonderful.
She loved the Christmas season with family, cooking enough food for a small army.
A big void is being felt right now by her family and many friends. A special thank you to her
good friends for many years Tina and Randy Murray. We couldn't have done it without you
Two.
