Jerry Andrew Matthews, 78, of Henderson, NC, passed away on Saturday, November 8, 2025 at Duke University Hospital.

Born in Vance County, he was the son of the late James Lafayette Matthews Sr. and Myrtle Williamson Matthews.

Mr. Matthews was a member of Gospel Independent Baptist Church where he served as the Sunday school superintendent, treasurer, and a deacon for many years.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Janice Ann Gupton Matthews; three children, Lori Matthews Egan (Greg), Leslie Paige Matthews, and Jerry Andrew Matthews Jr. (Felicia); seven grandchildren, Kayla Janiga (John), Parker Garrett, Saige Garrett, Justin Egan, Jerry Andrew "Trey" Matthews III, Ethan Matthews, and Bodee Matthews; two great-grandchildren, Ivey Janiga and Riggs Janiga; and many nieces and nephews and other extended family members. Alongside his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Joyce, Sarah, and Sandra; and two brothers, R.L. and Jimmy.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday, November 11, 2025 at 3:00 p.m. at Gospel Independent Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Robert Greene. Interment will immediately follow in the church's cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be Woody Parrish, Joe Williamson, Jerry Andrew "Trey" Matthews III, Ethan Matthews, Cam Greene, and Tim Newton. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be J.L. Matthews and P.G. Vaughan.

The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service on Tuesday in the church's fellowship hall from 2-3:00 p.m.
