Joan Jenkins Oakes, 88, of Oxford passed away Monday, July 28, 2025, at Brantwood Nursing and Rehab.
Born in Vance County on August 2, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Willis Austin Jenkins and Evelyn Jane Beddingfield Jenkins.
She was a faithful member of Oxford Baptist Church and was a member of the Oxford Women's Club.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 31, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Sossamon Funeral Home Chapel of Oxford. Rev. Johnny Yount will officiate. Burial will be private.
Survivors include one son, Barry Oakes (Lisa); one daughter, Joan Claiborne (Timmy); four grandchildren, Hunter Oakes, Spencer Claiborne (Faith), Haley Ramsey (Devin) and Cole Claiborne; two brothers, Sherwood Jenkins (Joyce) and Jeff Jenkins (Janet) and many nieces, nephews and other extended family members. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin Hunter Oakes and one sister, Sonya Woodard.
The family will receive friends Thursday, July 31, 2025, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Sossamon Funeral Home of Oxford. All other times, they will be at the home of Joan and Timmy Claiborne.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Oxford Baptist Church or to the charity of your choice.
