Katherine "Kathy" Hedgepeth Hughes, 70, of Henderson, North Carolina passed away on January 13, 2025, in Raleigh, North Carolina surrounded by her daughters.

Kathy was born on September 25, 1954, in Henderson, North Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Clair and Nellie Hedgepeth.

Kathy graduated from Vance Senior High in 1973, then went on to Vance Granville Community College, earning a degree in Early Childhood Education.

Kathy married Steve Hughes on May 16, 1982. They were married for 30 years. She was a devoted wife, and loving mother to her daughters, Katie and Kelly. However, her favorite title was "Mimi" to the loves of her life- Greyson, Hudson, and Luca.

Kathy was an employee of Vance-Granville Community College for 44 years in the early childhood center where she taught in the 3- and 4-year-old classroom. During this time, she taught and loved on many children. After her retirement, a plaque was placed outside of her classroom to honor her many years of service and dedication.

Kathy was a lifetime and active member of First United Methodist Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher for 31 years and was a member of Circle 5. She was also a member of the Twilight Garden Club and a member of the Kerr Lake Shag Club.

Kathy was known for her love of cooking and baking, spending time with her family, going to the beach, and doing for others.

Survivors include her daughters, Katie Pickler (Matt) of Concord and Kelly Lutz (Chris) of Wake Forest, North Carolina; three grandchildren, Greyson and Hudson Pickler and Luca Lutz; one sister, Beverly Kennedy and one brother, Gerry Hedgepeth (Kimberly) of Henderson. She is also survived by her nieces, nephew, great-nieces, and great-nephew.

She was preceded in death by her spouse Dwight Steven "Steve" Hughes and her parents Clair and Nellie Hedgepeth.

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 17 at 10:00 am at First United Methodist Church, followed by a memorial service at 11:00 am officiated by the Reverend George Loveland. At all other times, the family will be receiving at the home of Kathy Hughes.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First United Methodist Church.
