Obituary

Kermit Weldon Ellis Jr. Passed away peacefully at home on May 7, 2025. Born in Edinburg, Texas on September 2, 1943, to Kermit Weldon Ellis Sr and Margarita Delgado Ellis, Kermit spent his formative years in Henderson.

Kermit was a 1961 graduate of Henderson High School. He attended UNC Chapel Hill, graduating in 1965 with a degree in history. He then enlisted in the US Army spending two years in Germany. Following his military service, he was employed by the Employment Security Commision in Durham where he met his future wife, Meredith. He graduated from UNC Law School in 1976. In 1979 Kermit and Meredith were married and moved to Henderson. In 1985 Graham Ellis, the love of his life was born.

Kermit loved listening to classical music, reading, fly fishing, gardening, cooking, traveling and feeding his feathered friends. He had a warm spot in his heart for his furry companions, especially Miles the Border Collie and Vinnie the Tuxedo Cat.

He lived in Henderson for one year after his retirement in 2011 from the Vance County District Attorney's Office where he was an Assistant District Attorney for twenty-six years. While in Henderson he was a congregant of the Church of Holy Innocents where he served as an usher for many years.

After moving to Oxford in 2012 he held the office of Secretary for the Granville Education Foundation (GEF). He could often be seen at local eateries on Thursday nights dining with his pals Barry Faulkner, Billy Squires, James Powell and Martin Engel.

Kermit was preceded in death by his sister, Laura Redding, his parents, his uncle T.W. Ellis (Dorothy) and his aunt Oveida Mayo (Joe).

Kermit leaves behind his wife of forty-five years, Meredith Ellis, and his son, Graham Ellis, both of whom cared for him at home along with a loving team of caregivers and medical personnel from Heartland Hospice. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Tim Redding, nephew Max Redding, cousins Dottie Ellis, Diane Ellis, Tom Ellis (Bonnie), Verlie Norris, Joe Mayo and a host of other cousins including his goddaughter, Oveida Kedia. Not to be forgotten are his best friends Paul Gilster, Russell Odom and James Powell.
