Obituary

Martha Pruitt Thompson, of Oxford, NC, passed away on Thursday, August 28, 2025.

Martha was born on May 29, 1955, at Granville Medical Center to the late James Milton Pruitt and Ernestine Taylor Pruitt. She lived her life with a servant's heart, dedicating her time and talents to her family, her church, and her community.

After attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Martha married the love of her life, Johnny Thompson. Together they began their journey in Germany, where Johnny was stationed for a year. Upon returning home, she began her career as a dental assistant before later serving as a teacher's assistant, where her patience and compassion touched the lives of many children. She eventually found her true calling in music ministry and retired from Oxford Baptist Church, where she faithfully served as Minister of Music Assistant. A devoted member of the choir, Martha also taught children's choir and chaperoned numerous mission trips, sharing her love of music and faith with people of all ages.

Above all, Martha cherished her family and especially loved her role as "Mimi." Nothing brought her more joy than spending time with her grandchildren, who were the light of her life.

Martha is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Johnny Thompson; her children, Jonathan Thompson (Katie) and Mary Smith (Terry); and her cherished grandchildren, Bryson, Caden, Taylor, Rylee, Maci, and Walker. She is also survived by her siblings, Beth Adcock, Anne Whitehead (Roy), George Pruitt (Beth), Jim Cash, sister-in-law Judy Smith (Leon) and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother-in-law, William Adcock; sister-in-law, Laurie Pruitt; and great-nephew, Tyler Adcock.
