Mary Tuck Hicks, 91, passed away peacefully at Granville Medical Center on Friday, August 9th.

Mary was born in Halifax County, Virginia, and moved to Oxford as a teenager. She married Nelson Hicks and together they raised a beloved daughter, Sherry. Mary worked for over 50 years in the textile industry and also enjoyed assisting in respiratory therapy at Granville Medical Center for several years.

After retiring, Mary enjoyed a number of travel tours with her wonderful sisters-in-law, Dot and Elizabeth, journeying via bus to destinations including New York City, Chicago and Branson, Missouri.

Mary was active with the Eastern Star for many years and also enjoyed serving in the Red Hat Society for a number of years. She was a member of Gray Rock Methodist Church.

Later in life, Mary served as a dedicated and well-loved volunteer at the Granville County Senior Center, helping prepare lunch and promote fellowship there for over twenty years.

In her spare time, Mary was an avid gardener who loved working in her yard. She once cut down a tree by herself at the age of 89. Mary also loved to exercise, read, and do crossword puzzles, keeping her mind and body strong until the very end of her life.

Mary loved spending time with her family. She is survived by her daughter, Sherry, son-in-law Mike, granddaughter Angie, grand-dog Rufus, and three siblings: Jimmy, Thelma, and Mildred. She was preceded in death by her husband, Nelson, and five siblings: Walter, Carlton, J.D., Red, and Frances.

Mary's family would like to extend their gratitude to the kind staff at Granville Medical Center who provided excellent and compassionate care to Mary in her final hours.

In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations in Mary's memory to the Granville County Senior Center, P.O. Box 1287, Oxford, NC, 27565.

There will be a private memorial service for immediate family and a celebration of life to be held at a later date. The family will welcome visitors at their home on Tuesday, August 13th, between 1-4pm.
