Mary Leigh Hart Hughes
With her family by her side, Mother was welcomed into heaven on Mother's Day, May 14th, by a cherub of angels, and reunited with Daddy, the love of her life, following a very short illness. Mary Leigh was born on January 22, 1937 in Oxford, and is survived by her family, who will love, cherish and miss her this side of heaven. She was a committed and dedicated Mother, Gagoo, sister, aunt and friend to everyone. She had a servant's heart in how she lived her life each and every day. "She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue." Proverbs 31:26
Mary Leigh was a faithful and dedicated leader at the ASCS (Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Services) office of the US Department of Agriculture for over 40 years, having retired many years ago to enjoy time with family and friends.
To those who knew her, she loved baking cookies and cakes for her friends, gardening in her yard, watching the blue birds nest and seeing the new baby birds learn to fly, and was an avid reader and puzzle solver. She was rather particular about her yard, always taking pride in a well manicured lawn and flower garden. Her favorite activity was sitting on her porch with her grand boys and friends for "porch talk" and welcoming each person who passed her way with her friendly wave. Her children and five grandboys and granddaughter were the absolute love of her life. She always sacrificed her needs for the good of her family. She was fierce in her love, a constant protector of each of them. Always supportive and encouraging, always wise and kind, she was proud of them. Mother will also be remembered as selfless and patient, who always had a smile, even when things were tough. She had a quiet strength and never complained, always looking to the future. Mother was ever calm and serene in her faith. Mother was a member of Oxford Baptist Church, and attended virtual church faithfully and knew that eternal life was hers. Mother was a great woman and will be missed by many.
Her life is cherished by her children Lynwood Bryan Hughes, Jr. (Susan), Anita Hughes Bachmann (George) and son in love - Glen Sutton (Rose), 5 grandsons, Lawrence Cole Bachmann, Connor Hughes Bachmann, Harrison Hart Bachmann, Lynwood Bryan Hughes III (Kaylee), and Nolan Lee Hughes; a granddaughter in love - Kristina Sutton Grimes of Rocky Mount, a sister, Rebecca Hart Smith of Duncan, SC, a brother in love - Billie B Blackwell, and many nieces and nephews whom she loved as her own.
Friends may visit with the family at home or from 10-10:45 a.m. on Wednesday, May 17th at Oxford Baptist Church, prior to a celebration of her life at the Church's main sanctuary at 11am.
