Obituary

Ruby Elizabeth Harris

Ruby Harris, 95, beloved wife of Calvin Charlie Harris, caring mother, and wonderful Grandma/Great-Grandmother passed away peacefully at her home in Watkins Community on November 7, 2023. She was born in the Sandy Creek area of Vance County and graduated from Henderson High School in 1946. She then started working for Roses department stores home office in the bookkeeping department and then a bank in Henderson. While residing in Henderson, she married Calvin in 1947 and then moved to VA in the early 1950's with him and their young daughter Alice. They had a son, Dan, and raised their family while in Virgina for 34+ years where she worked for many years at a local bank, and as a bookkeeper for a local oil company before retiring. With home eventually calling, she returned back to North Carolina for good with Calvin in 1987 where they built a house in Watkins Community where Calvin had been born and raised.

Ruby was a great friend to many, always welcoming everyone with a friendly smile and a sincere hug. And as family and friends would attest (especially the grandkids), she was a wonderful cook that made the best chocolate cookies and pies along with many, many delicious home cooked family meals. And as her daughter-in-law Gray has said many times, "Ruby was the best mother-in-law a person could have".
She was preceded in death by her husband Calvin, parents Oscar and Addie Hoyle, and brothers Milton and Thomas Hoyle. She is survived by her two children – Alice (husband Gary) Glossop of Gambrills, MD, son Dan (wife Gray) Harris of Reston, VA, four grandchildren- Jeff (wife Cynthia) Glossop and two great-granddaughters of Atlanta; GA; Steven (wife Kory) and three great-grandsons of Olney MD; Jessica Harris of Auburn AL; and Frank (wife Leah) Harris of Athens AL.

She is also survived by five beloved sisters-in-law who have been her dear friends, travel companions and constant supporters throughout her lifetime- Katherine Hoyle, Linville Keeton, Betha Crews and Lucy Eatmon all of Henderson, NC and Annie Belle Howard of Chesapeake, VA.

The viewing hosted by the family will be at Sossaman's Funeral home in Henderson, NC Friday November 10th from 5:30-7:30 pm with burial service on Saturday November 11th 12:00 pm at Peace's Chapel Church in Fairport. Official pall bearers will be Mrs. Harris' nephews – David Hoyle, Steve Hoyle, Joel Harris, Bobby Eatmon, Norman Crews, and Charlie Keeton.

In lieu of flowers the family respectfully asked for donations to the Watkins Volunteer Fire Department in memory of Ruby Harris.
