Sonya Lipscomb
Carver
d. Aug 14, 2026
Oxford
On the morning of August 14th, Sonya Lipscomb Carver of Oxford, NC passed away with her family by her side, gently entering the next chapter of her life. Sonya wove joy, laughter, and care into the stories of all those around her. A lifelong lover of people and books, she left an indelible mark on her family and friends while exploring characters and worlds apart through her love of reading.
Born in Roxboro, NC during the spring of 1959, Sonya was the first child of Robert Stanley and Prilmer Jane Lipscomb. Her younger siblings (very) soon followed and her Person County childhood was filled with sibling shenanigans, hot summers, and all the family garden had to offer.
In her twenties, Sonya entered the work force and quickly caught the eye of Jon Carver. They were married soon after and settled in Oxford, NC, just a short Sunday drive from her family in Roxboro. After a few years, they started a family, welcoming her sons Camden and Ryan into the world and Sonya seamlessly transitioning into her role as mother.
A backdrop of the last forty years has been Sonya’s devotion to the church and community. She was a devout Christian and a member of Oxford United Methodist Church where she developed lifelong friendships and became a familiar, welcoming presence to generations of church members. After a few years working in administration for the church, she spent nearly two decades working in the school system; building another set of lasting connections with students, teachers, and families alike.
In Fall of 2017, Sonya became a grandmother as Ryan and his wife (Sonya’s “daughter-in-love”), Sarah, welcomed their first son. From then on, she embraced her leading role as “Nonni”, making sure each of her four grandboys lived rich and fulfilling lives. Lives full of books, crafts, jokes, outdoor adventures, and pool time. Those who knew her best will share that this was her highest calling–being Nonni to Weston (8), Amil (7), Levi (6), and Samir (5).
Sonya approached each new season with wit and warmth–daughter, sister, friend, wife, mother, and grandmother. To know Sonya was to know how to laugh, and this is how she will be remembered.
Sonya is survived by her loving husband, Jonathan Carver; her son, Camden Carver, and his wife, Anjana Mohanty; her son, Ryan Carver, and his wife, Sarah Carver; and her cherished grandchildren, Weston Carver, Amil Carver, Levi Carver, and Samir Carver.
She is also survived by her mother, Prilmer Lipscomb; her sister, Tonya Clayton, and husband, Donald Clayton, and son, Jacob; her brother, Steve Lipscomb, and wife, Denise Lipscomb, and children, Kristin and Max; and her sister, Bonnie Lipscomb, and partner, Michael Lankford.
