Steven "Steve"
Johnson
February 3, 2024
Steven Jay Johnson, 71, of Oxford, NC, a loving and devoted husband, father,
father-in-law, step-father, granddaddy, brother and friend to many passed away on
Saturday, February 3rd, from leukemia at the Hock Family Pavilion in Durham, NC. He
was surrounded by the love of his family. His passing has left an immense emptiness in
the hearts of many.
Steve was born in HighPoint, NC to the late Francis and Ruth Johnson. His father's
career took the family to Raleigh, Jacksonville and finally Fayetteville, NC, where Steve
graduated from Seventy-First High School in 1970.
Steve was a devoted member of his church, Peace's Chapel Baptist Church, and
served as a Deacon and on the Building and Grounds Committee. He loved God, his
Peace's Chapel family, pickleball and golf, and was a volunteer at Church Community
Ministries (CCM). He took pride in maintaining a meticulous yard, and was a man who
took care of everything - from repairing things around the house to keeping his vehicles
in top shape.
Steve was a proud veteran of the US Coast Guard, serving on-board icebreakers that
traveled to the Antarctic and the Arctic. He concluded his active service stationed at
Emerald Isle, NC. Steve graduated from Vance-Granville Community College and then
began a long career as a traffic control engineer with the NC DOT until his retirement.
Steve is survived by his wife, Margaret Ann "Maggie" Johnson; his sons, Jay Johnson,
Michael Johnson and Codie Johnson; and step-daughters Tracie (Jamie) Legg and
Jennnifer Grybosky. He was predeceased by his sister, Linda (Bill) Moseley. He is
survived by his brothers, Mike (Madeleine) and Todd (Michelle) Johnson; grandchildren
Magen Legg, Kendall Johnson, Jay Legg, Greyson Grybosky, Sophie Johnson, Libby
Johnson, Anna Johnson, Leah Johnson and Millie Johnson. He loved his nieces and
nephews: Susan (Trevor) Fortner, Aaron Moseley, Nathan Moseley, Kelly Colht,
Amanda Clark, Maggie Johnson, and Ian Johnson; great-nieces: Ivey (Layton) Morgan
and Maddie Fortner, and friends too numerous to name. And, he will be greatly missed
by his goldendoodle, Cooper.
Visitation will be held Thursday, February 8 at 4-6pm at Sossamon Funeral Home, 106
