George Henry Tyler Jr., 79, of 270 S. Stratford Drive, Henderson, NC died Sunday, February 26, 2017 at his home.
Born in Northampton County, NC, he was the son of the late George Henry and Pearl Grant Tyler.
Mr. Tyler received a Bachelor of Science Degree with a Major in Spanish and a Minor in Education from East Carolina University and mastered the Spanish language through studies in several Spanish-speaking countries. He was a United States Army Veteran, having served as a Sergeant in Germany. He retired as Sales Manager with Kraft Foods (formerly Seaboard Foods). After retirement, he served as ESL Director and Teacher at Vance Granville Community College and as a Spanish Teacher at Park View High School in South Hill, VA. He was a member of First United Methodist Church. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and loved the outdoors. He loved being on or near water, and boating. He found pleasure in woodworking and planting and growing fruit trees, grape vines, and fig bushes.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. Terry Huffines. Burial, with Military Honors, will follow at Sunset Gardens.
Surviving are his wife of thirty years, Jo Stanley Tyler; his three children, Susan Boulton and husband Chris of Chapel Hill, NC; Scott Tyler and wife Kim of Raleigh, NC; and Beth Murphy and husband Marc of Greenville, SC; seven grandchildren, Allie, Tyler, and Katherine Boulton; Addison and Grant Tyler; and Margaret and Blythe Murphy; mother-in-law, Linda P. Stanley of Henderson; brother-in-law, Bill Stanley and wife Jan of Greensboro, NC; three nephews, David Stanley of Greensboro, NC, Tom Stanley and wife Stacey of Greenville, NC, and Doug Stanley and wife Amber of Greenville, NC; and two great-nieces, Addison Stanley and Holden Stanley. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Lee Tyler and father-in-law, Jake Stanley.
The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the committal at Sunset Gardens. All other times, they will be at the home.
Serving as pallbearers will be David Ayscue, Henry Bryan, Elton Delbridge, Peter Gumaer, Tim Hedgepeth, Mark Stanley, Roy Munns, Bob Stanley, Matt Stone, Ben Taylor, Scott Currin, Spencer Delbridge, and Fred Zaytoun.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to the charity of ones choice.
